Rock Band Rivals is the newly named expansion pack coming to Rock Band 4 later this year. It’ll be bringing brand new features to the Rock Band franchise, and will provide exclusive access to future content updates, which will continue into 2017. One of these updates will add synchronous online multiplayer to the game, which will come around Holiday 2016.
Nope! They’re both awesome but they’re definitely different things. Rock Band VR is an experience built from the ground up for VR, and will be releasing on the Oculus Rift later this year.
Rock Band Rivals is going to introduce unique, new features to Rock Band that have never been in previous Rock Band titles before. We would have liked to show everyone at E3, but ultimately felt it was worth taking a little extra time to get things just right. We’ll have some exciting news in the coming weeks.
Everyone will receive stability enhancements, but only players who upgrade to Rock Band Rivals will receive future content and features, which will continue into 2017. All purchased DLC, legacy and new, will continue to be re-downloadable and playable in Rock Band 4, with or without the Rock Band Rivals expansion pack.
Synchronous online multiplayer is going to be provided to owners of Rock Band Rivals at no additional cost.
All prices are in USD. International pricing is coming later!

Bringing a library of 2,000 songs across to a new console generation is something that neither we nor 1st party has ever done before, so we’re treading new ground here together. We currently support all game export entitlements on Sony America (PlayStation®4 in North America) and Microsoft (Xbox One) and are working closely with them to get the rest of the exports and entitlements up and running as soon as we can. We are also working with PlayStation® overseas at SCEE (Europe and Oceania) to bring expired content to users as soon as possible.
