DLC Week of 12/21: Variety Singles!

We’re taking a tour through Rock Band history this week, with Rewinds from every numbered entry and a new song to kick off the Rock Band Rivals Season 4 Spotlight Pass Plus (yes, you read that correctly) starting this Thursday!

The Rock Band Rivals Season 4 Spotlight Pass Plus is a lot like what you already know. You buy a song pack that gets populated week-by-week for the length of the Rivals Season. When the Season ends, the pack goes away. The Spotlight Pass Plus is just that, but it also offers content for 12/21 and 12/28, which are the break weeks between Season 3 and Season 4. There are no Challenges, Seasonal or otherwise, it’s just a fun way to be delivered some gifts for the next couple of weeks. Starting the week of 1/04, it’ll be back to basics, with the Spotlight Pass song being a Spotlight Song in the Rivals Challenge the same week.

First up, we’ve got “Suffragette City” from the original Rock Band. One of the most memorable songs from the first Rock Band, it wasn’t a single when David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust was initially released, but it’s proven to be an enduring hit from Bowie’s career. Earlier this year, the entire Ziggy Stardust album was chosen to be entered in the National Recording Registry, forever preserving it. A more straight-forward rock track than other Bowie hits, every part is energetic and busy. Instruments leave nothing behind, while vocals bounce around like David Bowie is known for.

“Everlong” makes its return from Rock Band 2 this week. The second single from The Colour and the Shape, it had several top 5 chart placements and a music video nominated at the MTV Music Video Awards, "Everlong" is an icon of the decade, and one of the biggest songs in the long and storied career of Foo Fighters. One of the great stamina tests in the Rock Band library, drummers will have to learn to play at speed or fail out well before reaching a chorus. Guitar plays one of the most memorable ‘90s riffs, while bass follows along. And of course, vocals gets all the highs and lows of Dave Grohl’s incredible performance.

Skid Row makes their Rock Band song debut with “18 and Life”. The band’s second single off their debut album, it went on to become their biggest hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. You’ll find a surprising amount of range in the vocals, with plenty of nuance to learn. The guitar keeps busy throughout, throwing in some quick licks and even a solo. Drums are a more standard rock beat, but there’s some variation on the kick pattern to keep you focused.

Wrapping up this week’s Rewinds and releases is “Plush”, the gigantic ‘90s hit from Stone Temple Pilots, previously on the Rock Band 3 disc. Yet another second single, this time off of Core, it landed in the perfect storm of grunge in the ‘90s, earning the band a Grammy and an MTV Music Video Award. Featuring a driving guitar line leads with pulsing drums behind it, all while Scott Weiland’s gritty vocals keep the song low, truly marks the song as one of the seminal hits of the ‘90s.

Songs can be purchased individually for $1.99 each. The Rock Band Rivals Season 4 Spotlight Pass Plus can be purchased for $15.99.
