Fitness Challenge 2013: Christine's Progress

Stair Climbing! Harmonixers are joining the Dance Central fitness campaign to work alongside you in using Dance Central and Kinect to reach personal goals. In this series of personal blog posts from Harmonix, we’re sharing what our goals are and how we are using Dance Central to accomplish them!

NAME: CHRISTINE

PROFILE: CHARITY STAIR-CLIMB TRAINEE

I’m doing a charity stair climb in March and need to train to be able to climb 61 flights of stairs. Read her introduction blog here!

HOW ARE YOU DOING

Great! I’ve been climbing flights of stairs at the office with fellow DC3 Fit participant Jessa. And starting off the DC3 Fit plans with the Get Low Challenge helped me work the same muscle groups that stair climbing would. The following week was the Unlucky 13 Challenge and I picked “Gangnam Style.” It turned out to be a great choice, because my Fitbit activity meter registered the gameplay as more than 25 flights of stairs! Another helping factor is that our offices were just moved to the 14th floor. So for the rest of the program, I’ll be taking the stairs to my office.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING

I’m feeling pretty good about my progress. I’m a little worried about climbing 61 flights of stairs. I’ve maxed out at about 22 at one time, and 57 in one day (the day I did “Gangnam Style” for the Unlucky 13 Challenge). 61 all at once is still daunting, but I think continuing to play the Get Low Challenge alongside new challenges, and continuing to climb the stairs every day, will get me to my goal.

SETBACKS & SURPRISES

The big surprise was that I got a terrible sinus infection and couldn’t play/do stairs/run for more than two full weeks! I still haven’t gotten back to running due to the extra chilly weather we’ve had lately, but I was thrilled to get back to playing Dance Central 3 at home. I had to go back and do the Get Low Challenge a week later than everyone else, but I still did it!

As for unexpected successes…climbing the stairs to 14 wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think all the running and Dance Central playing has increased my general endurance and made climbing 14 flights of stairs a lot easier than they were a year and a half ago when I did the stair climb for the first time.

FRIDAY FITNESS CHALLENGES

The Get Low Challenge has been my favorite so far. Some of my favorite Dance Central songs are on it – “Get Low,” “Lap Dance,” “Bass Down Low,” “Moves Like Jagger,” and a bunch more.

MY PERSONAL PLAYLIST

My go-to songs would be:

  • Gangnam Style by Psy (DLC)

  • Calabria 2008 by Enur ft. Natasja (DC3)

  • Low by Flo Rida (DLC)

  • Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 (DC3)

  • Get Low by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz (DC3)

  • Now That We Found Love by Heavy D & The Boys (DC3)

  • Disturbia by Rihanna (DLC)

  • Lap Dance by N.E.R.D. (DLC)

  • Starships by Nicki Minaj (DC3)

  • Bass Down Low by Dev ft. The Cataracs (DC3)

It’s key to put “Bass Down Low” at the end of the list. I’ve tried starting play sessions with that, and I always wind up regretting it. Protip: stretch first.

MOVING FORWARD

I’m hoping to get a TON more playtime in now that I don’t have a terrible cough. Looking forward to participating in all the Friday Fitness Challenges. And I plan to take the stairs up to the new office on 14 every day at least once a day.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

If you had a setback like me - either from being sick or getting too busy or whatever – get back into it as soon as you feel able to. It was important that I took time to recover before jumping back in, and now I feel more motivated than ever to keep up with my fellow #DC3Fit-ers and play all the challenges!
