Vocal-forward, synth-heavy, with driving guitars and big, harmonized vocal choruses – this is exactly the type of infectious ear-candy one might expect from songwriter Jeff Wright. A decade of fronting bands on the global stage has armed the guy with innate knowledge of what gets crowds moving; the just-released “Bombs Away” from his new project, Blastergun, is Exhibit A. Jarrod Alexander Fletcher’s assertive, nuanced drums provide the foundation for Wright’s melodic vocals and bouncy, crunchy fret-work as the song periodically employs some deft “stop on a dime” hiccups to punctuate meaningful transitions. Masterclass production guides the layered, textured arrangements directly to pop/rock righteousness. Fall may be here, with winter already knocking at the door, but any time is always the right time for the perfect summer driving song and “Bombs Away” delivers the goods.
Genre-blending Houston artist DE’WAYNE teamed up with Florida rapper POORSTACY for the spring 2022 hit “DIE OUT HERE,” a satisfying slice of full-tilt, fuzzed-out alt-rock with attitude in spades. Spirited guitar hooks, rumbling bass, and lo-fi vocals in the verses build to an explosive, undeniable chorus. Momentum remains high throughout, with relentless drums and bass defining a cardiac rhythm that nails the sweet spot for beats per minute. The track’s upbeat energy sits in contrast to the contemplative, dramatic lyrical content about being true to one’s self despite societal expectations and the challenges of evolving as an artist – and as a person – into adulthood. Staying true to yourself never sounded so danceable and flat-out catchy. This one’s gonna stick in your head for a while.
