DLC Week of 10/14: Fall Out Boy, Orgy and Weezer

Second Break Week

In 2018, Fall Out Boy recorded a cover of Whitney Houston’s 1987 hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” as part of the Spotify Singles collection. The song features some great guitar riff layers, an upbeat drum groove and Patrick Stump’s incredible delivery of the iconic Whitney Houston vocal melody. And if you don’t think the regular melody is tricky enough, prepare for the key change in the final chorus.

On their 1998 album Candyass, LA-based industrial rock band Orgy released a cover of New Order’s 1983 track “Blue Monday.” The track starts with the original versions unique drum intro played on an acoustic drumkit with extremely distorted and detuned guitars delivering the backing chords with a new level of grit and intensity. The Orgy cover features synth melodies similar to the original and Jay Gordon’s strong delivery of the vocal melody make this track a faithful yet unique cover of the original.

From their surprise 2019 release Weezer (AKA the Teal Album), Weezer’s cover of “Africa” by Toto was the sole single from the album and one of the band’s most streamed songs. Much like the original, Weezer’s “Africa” starts with the iconic drum pattern and keyboard intro but features Rivers Cuomo’s unique vocal delivery and the band’s own take on the production elements.

Fall Out Boy “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” Orgy “Blue Monday,” and Weezer “Africa” will be available for $1.99 each.
