Combining influences from multiple Elton John hits, the vocal talents of Dua Lipa and disco-esque production from PNAU, “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” was responsible for giving Elton John a UK Top 10 single in now six decades. The track features a diverse array of synthesizer layers like strings, filtered chords and a plucky syncopated bassline all overtop of a danceable drum pattern. The vocals start with Elton singing a verse and pre-chorus from his 1989 hit “Sacrifice” and Dua Lipa singing the chorus of John’s 1972 hit “Rocket Man.” “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)” is a perfect combination of old and new sounds and a great track to round out the year.
“brutal” is the fifth single from Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 debut album Sour. The track starts out with a lovely string arrangement before moving into the massive descending guitar line paired with a deep bass line and heavy drum pattern. Olivia Rodrigo’s lyrics explore feelings of hopelessness, disappointment and angst that speaks to the Generation Z experience. And the juxtaposition of the talked verse section and the distorted high intensity chorus help amplify those emotions.
