“The Specialist”
Do you have a favorite genre or specific song you constantly have on repeat? Never tire of playing the same setlist night after night? There’s nothing wrong with that cavalier attitude. In fact, our Week 4 challenge embraces “The Specialist” - those of us who like what we like and throw musical diversity out the window. We have two new DLC songs this week that may just sneak into your comfort zone: “Tonight” from Magnolia Park ft. Lil Lotus and “Matilda” by PUP.
Hailing from sunny Orlando, Florida, Magnolia Park released their genre-bending debut Halloween Mixtape at the end of 2021. The album was a hit with their growing fan base and spawned the standout single “Tonight” featuring Lil Lotus. Despite some dark lyrics, “Tonight” is decidedly upbeat and melodic. Multiple vocalists will be fun to follow and the guitar chord changes will give the strummers a workout. Be sure to catch them on tour with Sum 41 later this summer.
Canadian quartet PUP (aka Pathetic Use of Potential) recently released their fourth LP, The Unravelling of PUPTheBand. Formed in the early ‘10s, PUP has received numerous accolades and awards (including a Juno in 2020 for their album Morbid Stuff). PUP’s “Matilda” proves that, over a decade into their career, the band is rocking harder than ever. The song, an ode to singer Stefan Babcock’s favorite guitar, is one of the highlights from their new album and will be an instant mainstay in your RB setlist. Featuring heavily layered guitars, a stomping bassline and driving rhythms, “Matilda” is a great pick for the crew to show their stuff.
