Employee Spotlight: Genevieve Roy

Hi there, I’m Genevieve!

I’m the Legal & Licensing Coordinator at Harmonix, and I started working here a little over a year and a half ago. I support the legal and music teams, which includes facilitating the legal review for our games, managing music approvals and extensions, and contract administration. I get to work with a number of teams across the company, including marketing, product management, and finance. I have a hand in supporting all of our current projects, like FUSER and Rock Band, as well as all of the cool new stuff that we’ve got in the works.

I studied Media Production at Emerson College here in Boston, which led me to a number of roles in the media industry. My first job out of college was as a DJ/board operator at a country radio station. Later, I worked at a small classical record label as part of their licensing and custom music creation arm, placing music we represented in advertisements, TV shows, and even some indie movies.

My favorite Harmonix moment was the FUSER launch. It felt great to release it after such a crazy year, and I love the world FUSER creates. The FUSER festival has been a great escape this year, and I’m proud of the team’s work!

What is your favorite Harmonix game and why?

I definitely have a sentimental spot for the first two Guitar Hero games and the first Rock Band – those were staples in my dorm’s common room. So many good memories!

What Rock Band instrument do you play?

Guitar, though I have dabbled in vocals.

What's your favorite Rock Band song of all time?

“Paranoid”

Tell us about your outside-of-work music/artistic experience

I like playing guitar/singing/writing, just as an at-home hobby. Pre-Covid, I was hosting a weekend show on a freeform format radio station, WMFO; a freeform format means I just get to have fun and go niche playing all of my favorite post-punk/goth stuff like The Cure, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The name of the show is Dead Air. Hopefully I’ll be back in the studio soon!

What’s your wfh set up like?

I love my giant monitor, but the best purchase was definitely my office drink fridge – I missed the HMX one so much, I got a mini version for home. So many varieties of seltzer in that bad boy.

Is there anything special or fun on your desk? (send a picture if you can!)

A lot of cat-related knick-knacks, cards, and coffee cups. And my cat will often try to get on my desk but settle for the printer – his name is Dizzy.

What's your go-to Karaoke Jam?

I’m rarely bold enough to do karaoke, but when I do, it’s the very bold choice of “Before He Cheats.”

What are you doing to stay sane these days?

Farming simulator games are a source of serenity (like Story of Seasons and Animal Crossing), as is binge watching reality TV.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. Dinner in Paris, weekends in Aruba, or if I could just bypass some traffic in Boston, that would be super.

Do you have any secret talents?

Talent is a strong word, but I can balance a spoon on my chin.
